The New York Times has an excellent article on the rise of hardware startups. We are proud to have worked on architecture, advice, and developed assemblies for Strongarm Technologies, one of the companies in the article, and we continue to provide support as they scale their business.

It's certainly true that the availability of incredibly cheap and capable development hardware has been a big boost for the startup community. Now individuals can cheaply and quickly make functioning prototypes.

My own personal favorite area is the melding of cheap sensors and wireless into a broad range of data collection and analysis products.

One of the pieces of advice that I provide to some companies is that the hardware is an enabler for collecting data, it can be the data analysis and learnings from that which will propel the defensive value of the company. So its worth thinking during the concept and development phases and deciding if the device is the product or the data is the product. The answer to that question changes the whole approach of the company in fund raising, R&D spend, staffing and sales.
